LATIN TEACHER IN LYON EXPERIMENTS W1TH MICROCOMPUTER
Pierre Louis Sestier, Teacher of Latin at the lycée of Ampère de Lyon, has been using microcomputers in the teaching of Latin, according to various French language newspapers and magazines. The approach used seems heavily grammatical, with emphasis on providing the declensions of all nouns and the conju-gations of all verbs met in the initial stages of Latin. One picture story reports that « thanks to the computer the stu dents learn their Latin declensions with joy. » M. Sestier points out that the microcomputer never tires of repetition and enables pupils to learn at their own rate of speed. It also encourages children who are timid in a classmom situation.
One article states that 10.000 microcomputers were slated for installation in 1979 in 1100 lycées but to date only 200 lycées have been equipped with them, Moreover, the Socialist government has frozen the installation plans, since teacbers do not know how to program microcomputers or even use them, and the Ministry of Education does not have personnel capable of selecting programs and integrating them into the curriculum. (Editorial Note: Gratitude is ex-pressed to Linda Armao, graduate student in Romance Languages at the Univer-sity of Pennsylvania, for bringing this experiment to our attention.)

SENATE OF PENNSYLVAN1A URGES CLASSICAL LANGUAGE STUDY A « sense of the Senate » resolution was passed June 6, 1983 by the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania urging that every non-vocational high school graduate « should have three years of a foreign language and two years of a classical language. » Students should also « have been exposed to a foreign language » before they leave the sixth grade, A « sense of the Senate » resolution expresses the viewpoint of that body on a particular issue; it does not, however, carry the force of law.
